Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Most of the virtual internship was made up of talks on things like EY's culture, sustainability, diversity & inclusion, and business etiquette. We were also given a case study task to complete, which we were able to work on with our group most days, and there was a presentation element to this as well.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Not really, but this is totally understandable. During the normal in-office internship, I understand that interns are able to take on client work, but it makes sense that we didn't have this opportunity as we were working from home on our own devices. However, there was definitely an element of independent working with regards to the case study task.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I've definitely learned a lot about what it takes to be a consultant and also that it's very important to ask questions. I'm not someone who loves presentations normally, but we were only presenting to one mentor (who we had met before) so it wasn't too nerve-wracking.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Loads - there were opportunities to meet buddies (a group of graduates assigned to us for a casual chat), a Teams call with our regional office managers, a mentor to assist us with our presentations, and a very helpful Student Recruitment team who were available throughout. Overall, there was a relaxed atmosphere and I was never afraid to ask a question.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
At EY, there is definitely a culture which focuses on people and team building. We had talks on diversity & inclusion, sustainability, CSR, and mental health, which demonstrated EY's commitment to these areas. There were also some social events organised by members of our regional offices which were so fun and a great opportunity to put some faces to our department.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed it. I wasn't sure what to expect from a virtual internship, but the talks were all really engaging, we were definitely given enough breaks and fun activities, and the team made sure that everyone knew where they were going even despite some tech difficulties. I would highly recommend the experience.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend EY to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to EY
Don't be too nervous about interviews! If you get to the interview stage, the partner already knows from your application that you're qualified, so they're really just trying to see what you're like as a person and whether you would fit into their team. I would also advise people to go in with an open mind about other service lines or competencies - you might surprise yourself.
