Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The first week is a training week located in an external venue near the office, where you are taught fundamentals such as accounting, valuation and modelling. You join the desk in week 2, where you predominantly help analysts with tasks, this could include making pitch books/whole decks, making company profiles etc. However a significant amount of time in the internship involves not working on anything, despite offering all team members help.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
During the internship work flows can vary, at times you can receive more work, however as a whole many days could go by where you receive no tasks at all despite asking the team for help daily. If you have no finance background you were significantly hindered in the type of tasks given, so the experience didn't truly reflect what it is like working as an analyst - instead you work more on research tasks.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Lots of emphasis on research skills and attention to detail. Many tasks involve researching about an industry, finding trends in the market and working on both public and private companies. Time management is also key as it is important to ensure you are able to manage tasks from multiple people throughout the week.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The employees are very friendly and most usually respond quickly to questions as a whole. However in terms of the final project, very little guidance was given and support was only really given a few days before the day of the presentation. However the mentor was a great point of contact. Generally the experience varied from intern to intern depending on the team you worked with, some received a lot some very little.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Generally friendly environment and easy to ask for coffee chats with other people in different teams. Almost all employees respond quickly to questions and offer a lot of support. The intern program offers interns with a pre-internship buddy, buddy and mentor offering many points of contact for support and guidance throughout.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
Was a good insight into how Investment banking works, however very little responsibility given with a lot of days having received no tasks. Having little financial background hindered the level of tasks you could do for the analysts. However, the company culture as a whole is very friendly and inclusive. In terms of learning technical skills throughout the internship however very little opportunity was given for that.
