Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Advising clients on how to manage their VAT and GST requirements. The role of an intern largely involves helping draft emails and conducting initial research, but the business also encourages you to do lots of training. For example, we've had indirect tax training sessions and you get to join calls with senior management.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Everyone gets given some interesting work so there are definitely some responsibilities. However, you always have support from your team and buddy so it is very manageable. Occasionally you get to join a big project your team is working on which is a great learning opportunity.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Indirect tax involves a mixture of legal work, accounting and consulting so you develop a pretty broad skillset. I doubt many people know anything about indirect tax before starting so its normal to learn lots of content very quickly. I also feel like I've learnt loads by just going to internal and external meetings with senior people in my team. For example, as an SVS intern you can join some strategy meetings where you get an interesting overview of the whole business.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
The support is great. There's a big induction and quite a few business specific events which help you fit into the company. Within the team there is also great support as everyone is open to helping. For example, I have weekly chats with my 'people leader' where he checks how I'm finding the programme.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I like the company culture. The firm is massive (I think over 20k people in the UK) so I've only really seen my side of the business. There is a great intern support group and the culture in tax is pretty good, the firm is very ambitious but the environment isn't too intense.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I've really enjoyed it. There have been loads of things to learn and there are some great people to meet. Joining such a big firm can be quite intimidating but there is support to help you settle in.

What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
Research the business area as much as you can and see if anything interests you. However, very few have prior experience in tax so it's normal to not understand things in the interviews and when you start.
