Summer Vacation Student - IT Audit Review

Helping out with client work, shadowing meetings, and learning about the department and wider company at Deloitte. There was opportunity to meet and network with members at all levels on the corporate ladder, and there were regular events organised with other students on the vacation scheme both across departments and (less frequently) across offices.

It didn't really dawn on me until I started working there just how enormous a company Deloitte is. There's a massive variety of work and roles available, and there is opportunity for sideways movement if you wish to change department (though this is typically once you've finished the graduate scheme and been on for a couple of years). Everyone is really personable and friendly, and the managers don't feel so much like a "boss" as much as they are an experienced colleague who're happy to help or answer any questions you may have.

Very friendly and personable atmosphere. Every single person I met has been interesting and kind. I was told that generally the more southern offices are typically more corporate, so that is something to bear in mind, but on the whole the company seems to really prioritise having good personal and professional relationships with your colleagues. This includes good socials and networks with sufficient budget behind them that they can host regular and fun events.

I enjoyed it. I wasn't really sure what working in Audit actually entailed when I applied, and whilst IT Audit doesn't actually involve any writing code, it was interesting (though definitely different) to learn about the processes involved with running checks on companies and making sure they're compliant with government and internal policy etc. My main highlight was working with the people, as they were all lovely at all levels of management and even extremely senior members of the firm gave me the time of day when I wanted to get to know them and learn a bit about how long they'd worked there, how they ended up at Deloitte, etc.
