Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

My role as an engineer is to deal with customer requests for improvements/bug fixes and new functionality for Lighthouse’ core product. This involves working mainly with SQL and C# but on the odd occasion will also require use of Oracle

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

At Lighthouse you take on as much responsibility as you feel comfortable taking on! I was very keen to take on lots of responsibility which has helped me experience tons more than I was originally expecting to and I have developed my knowledge lots!

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

In just a year, my programming knowledge has improved more than in many years of education, working full-time in software you really pick things up insanely fast! I have learnt so many little tricks to programming I had never even heard of before!

I have had a mentor throughout my whole time at Lighthouse who I very regularly have check-up meetings with, this guidance has been crucial to my improvement throughout the year! For support I can speak to literally anyone in the company!

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Most of the engineers in the company have come from placements in the past and so the culture is youthful and there is lots of chances for social! It is a perfect mix of professional and fun in a workplace! I have made friends with lots of my colleagues!

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

The experience this year has been amazing. I didn’t really know what to expect going into this industry year as I have done some full-time work before in a very different setting, but the experience has been amazing, and I have met some great new people!
