Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
Each day focussed on a different business division. This included investment banking (at UBS referred to as Global Banking), asset management, global markets, wealth management, technology and sell-side research. There were also lots of interactive sessions throughout the week, including AmplifyME simulations in IB and markets. There was lots of networking, both at lunch time and the opportunity to organise your own coffee chat. There were also panel discussions, with a range of UBS employees from graduates to senior leadership. Also, we got to explore the UBS offices, including their bee hives!
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was great; it definitely gave me a thorough understanding of UBS as a whole which I think is super useful. This way, if I join as a summer intern, I will have some level of understanding of what everyone does if I meet someone new in the canteen. It was great to learn about how UBS benefits from cross-divisional synergies, for example between asset and wealth management. There is also so much internal mobility at UBS, and graduates are encouraged to complete a rotation outside of their business area, or to another team within their business area.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I definitely developed my technical knowledge in the Global Banking session with AmplifyME, and my ability to react quick in the Global Markets session. I also continued developing my ability to network throughout the week. It was also very interesting to go through all the business divisions, as this caused me to consider career paths I may previously have never considered, and keep an open mind throughout the programme.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
UBS's culture definitely makes it stand out. Firstly in terms of the building, there are communal working spaces throughout, gardens on the roof, and a fabulous gym. This means that people have opportunities to relax and take a break from work. Everyone at UBS is willing to help each other. Furthermore, deal teams are lean in Global Banking, which I love. Many deal teams only have one analyst, which means they quickly get exposure to their seniors and learn how to do things quickly. UBS's incredible culture is summed up with the fact that their average staff tenure is 8 years, which is definitely a lot higher than other banks.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to UBS
Firstly, make sure your cover letter is formatted correctly and on a single page. UBS does not have cover letters, so your CV needs to be great. For the test, practice a lot. Make sure your numerical skills and knowledge of UBS's values are prepared. For the Hirevue, show your passion. Know about UBS, whether it is the structure of their teams or their Employee Networks. UBS does not use AI in recruitment, so someone is watching your Hirevue. Make sure that you are smiling, dressed professionally (overdress if in doubt!) and using hand gestures.
