Vacation Scheme Student Review

In the morning, I attended presentations on topics that varied from an overview of the Firm's key departments, to the Global Inclusion and Diversity group. I had lunch with the other vacation schemers, or my trainee buddy, and grabbed coffee with associates/partners. As I sat in a Real Estate team, my tasks ranged from reviewing and drafting leases, and other agreements, and undertaking research tasks. I also sat in on a client call.

It was great to have a personal insight into the business, and how not only clients are at the heart of BCLP, but also the people that make the Firm what it is. Learning about all the various sub-teams with the departments, and how one deal can involved multiple teams highlighted the importance of collaboration within BCLP. The path from trainee to associate to partner was attainable, and very much encouraged, for anyone at BCLP.

I developed my attention to detail through researching tasks, and when reviewing documents. Also, juggling tasks required excellent organisational skills. I learnt the importance of customer service as a law firm is a client-service business after all. When reviewing agreements for clients, my trainee buddy stressed the importance of not only referring questions to your supervisors, but thinking 'what would my client want to do?' and ensuring you ask them the right questions.

Everyone I came into contact with was extremely welcoming and open to listening to all my questions - from the partners, to the caterers in the office, there was not one individual that stood out negatively. BCLP are very much focused on ensuring inclusion is respected at the Firm, and diversity initiatives run through all levels. Involvement in pro bono is heavily encouraged, and we were invited to a Windrush awareness event hosted by BCLP.

I cannot stress enough how amazing and incredible the Scheme was. Every activity and task I did, and presentation I attended, really showed how BCLP is as an organisation and as a large international family. The Scheme had a hybrid approach, where we could go into the office if our supervisors were in, and this made all the difference. Simply being able to talk frankly with everyone you encountered made the Scheme 10 times better.
