Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I spent a lot of my time doing tax returns. I finished I think 8 or 9 by the time I was done. At first I was given fairly straightforward ones, was taught how to use and navigate the software they used - by the end I was tasked with essentially filling them in start to finish (going through all the clients documents, logging it, then writing it up). Along with this I helped other team members with some advisory work (making PowerPoints, writing notes etc.). Obviously I wasn’t as qualified to be able to contribute massively with the advisory stuff so mainly did things surrounding tax compliance, but it was interesting to get an insight.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was definitely. I know it changes department to department, as from speaking to other people there working in other fields I heard they didn’t actually get given that much work. For me, I definitely felt part of the team during my time there, not just an intern that would be there for 6 weeks. Obviously I was given lots of guidance and had to be talked through a lot of stuff I was doing fairly meticulously (particularly in the first couple of weeks), but by the end I had a full list of client work that I’d been given and could crack on with which was nice.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Definitely. Besides my ability now to be able to work and use the systems they used in that department, more generally, I think the ability to be able to translate my academic skills to a corporate setting was something I’d never done before and was a key takeaway. Working as part of a team, being able to integrate and feel comfortable in that setting, and knowing how to best use the resources and people around you to develop your own skills and get better.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was given lots of guidance. As mentioned, each job I did came with a fairly strong walkthrough before I did it which I appreciated. Every bit of work that I did was checked thoroughly afterwards too, and was given feedback for. This was where I felt I learnt the most from my work there, when I was sat down and talked through the work that I did.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
There was a great atmosphere, particularly in our team. It was nice to go to the work socials too and get insight to how people were out of work. Everyone was really friendly and helpful in the office though.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I massively enjoyed my placement and would recommend it to anyone. I felt lucky to get there as I know how competitive the schemes are and I think I definitely made the most of it. It was a fun 6 weeks and it got me excited to work there upon leaving university.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
Make the most of it (even if that’s working out that that job isn’t for you). Know that it’s competitive so it would be a waste if you didn’t fully immerse yourself into the scheme
