Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Day to day the kpmg internship involved meeting your peers on placement, and colleagues from the business, on induction and welcome event- then learning more via day training, how to log in and use your laptop, IT software and applications etc. I then used these apps and functions plus word and excel to complete client work occasionally working external at clients but also within office environment, wherever the need was. there were chances to socialise also
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
You really cannot under estimate the amount of exposure you get to responsibility, from a very early stage. you are not the tea person or junior doing the photocopying... ok so i was occasionally asked to do general office work, but fundamentally you are treated as an equal certainly compared to junior graduate scheme starters. I was doing similar work to them day in day out and met senior client staff also - it really is comprehensive!

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learnt new skills specific to the role such as technical accounting and trial balance work, which i had not seen before. The other core skills are communication, problem solving, time management and deadline setting which tied into my current skills honed in wider education. The experience is holistic as you use so many of your current skills, developing these to advanced level, plus learning new technically advanced skills also alongside. It really is an education

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
you do get frequent support and guidance yes. I would say that although you join and wonder what you will be doing, how the laptop and tech will work .. well I should not have been worried. I got so many opportunities to learn, train and develop. they do not throw you in unprepared. but you do need to learn fast and grasp concepts. so you do need to be ready to succeed learn and show you are capable

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
i think this is a simple question as the culture and ways of working were all on point, and one might expect from a huge company of this standing. there was also an element of support, well being and fun - there were socials and oportunities to meet other people, from juniors in the firm right up to partner level. at client site, in the office and at socials too. you engross in the culture and take it all in

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
the placement was first class and better than any placement or insight experience i have done before, and I have been in a few - virtual and in person. the people and culture are great and i had a fine experience, i think the best parts were the responsibility, exposure to client staff and work, and the chance to meet new people all highly capable, alongside on the placement. the experience was great and i was sad it ended

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to KPMG
i have already given some advice to friends, that they should apply and give it a go. there is nothing to lose taking a placement - you get exposure, pay and a strong corporate experience. you also have a big name on your cv, and possibly a longer term opportunity to remain within the firm. if you are at university at any stage there is generally an opportunity to take a placement or insight, so look into it!
