Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
In this role I worked as an intern in the global markets division in London. Within the division, there are multiple lines of business, including credit, rates, FX, cross-asset, and all areas had sales and trading roles. Depending on the specific line the jobs will differ, but I spent most of my time supporting other more senior members on my team, providing them with data analytic tools, as well as developing my own trading ideas by talking to different people.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Not too much. As this role requires certification, I was not able to perform a large part of the role due to regulatory requirements. However I had the chance to assists more senior members and provide them with important results and reusable tools for their work, either on making business decisions or making presentations to other stakeholders. I should suggest that being an intern, the top goal is to learn about how the business works, thus one need to be proactive in obtaining learning opportunities and hence taking more responsibilities.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Yes. The most important skill I learned here is how to connect different parts of financial markets, and how to understand the interaction of them. The way this is achieved is by developing pricing models and using professional softwares to look at how things move together. In addition to this, I improved my programming skills and learned to use many new packages to analyse data, test strategies etc, because a lot of the work are done in Python or excel.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Depends on the role, I received a moderate amount of help. In most cases, the manager will ask you to perform a certain task, and most of the information requires research and input from me. But more senior staff are always willing to help when there is a problem, and sometimes I find great help by just talking to some of them. So I was able to do independent work and also get necessary support when needed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company had a really welcoming culture, most people are open to questions, and even senior leaders are willing to spend some of their time with interns and juniors. This provides a lot of learning opportunities for us to learn about the company, the career and more. People are also very hard-working and good at their jobs, they are able to demonstrate strong technical skills and are willing to share them. So it is certainly good for juniors to join.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
A lot. I had the opportunity to speak to leaders from CEO to managers in other lines, and I did meaningful and challenging works on my role. Besides the work, we also had a lot of activities such as charity works on polishing furnitures, company sponsored drinks after work, barbeque on the roof garden of the company building, all are very good experience. I was able to learn and enjoy my time with some other colleagues, which I think is a good thing for an internship.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Wells Fargo to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Wells Fargo
First thing is to apply early, Wells Fargo tend to finish recruiting by February, so one would want to apply before that. The most important thing is to know your CV and know anything you wrote on it very well. The interviewers can ask very specific and in-depth questions about your past experience, courses learned at university etc. Also have some solid knowledge about the economy will help, because this is a bank and an understanding of macroeconomy will be useful anyways.
