Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
Audit documentation, sample testing/ agreeing invoices etc. Communication with audited entity management to challenge and query missing or unclear documentation.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given responsibility to talk directly with management and raise queries, particularly after a week or two. I worked on a range of high risk audit testing, but we were not asked to do any stock counts or visit client sites.

Developed Excel and teamwork skills. Learnt BDO/ audit specific skills for technical work and specific tools and programmes.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Managers and support staff were eager to help and put effort into being as helpful as possible. However, there were some issues with organisation in the company and we were not given the opportunity to do some of the activities we were promised at the start of the internship (e.g. partner shadowing). There was also issues with my information being recorded incorrectly in the IT systems and we were not given much advanced notice of where we were needed etc.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
A good company culture that encouraged teamwork and 'Helping you Succeed'. More relaxed than some places I have been previously, but teams worked well together.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed it overall and I gained a good amount of experience. I would have liked to get to work on a wider variety of audit types and different teams, but was only put on two engagements, both similar. I also would have liked to get more insight into what I was to be doing in advance/ increased efficiency in the firm would be good.

What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
That the culture is very positive, and different to the big four; but organisation doesn't seem to be a strong suit of the firm.
