Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I completed audit work for BDO. This involved rotation around the various sectors helping each team with audit testing. This involves carrying out testing, requesting samples, team meetings and interacting with the audited entity. The other interns and myself have also been working on a corporate social responsibility project in which we gave a presentation in our final week to propose an idea to the firm of how they can increase their corporate social responsibility.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes, we were given our own tasks to work on and complete our own testing. I felt I was supported well through this transition, beginning with simpler tasks to aid my understanding and towards the end of the internship I was given more complex tasks. For example, I was handed the task of requesting supporting documentation from an entity and given the responsibility to communicate with them in doing so.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I think my confidence has definitely improved since starting the internship, I had to meet new people everyday, talking to people around the office and networking and this helped give me confidence to ask more questions which has aided my understanding of the audit work. I definitely have extended my existing business knowledge or how companies run and the different areas of costs, expenses and revenue etc. I have also improved my teamwork skills.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received excellent support during the internship, all of my project managers were helpful with specific audit work. My people manager regularly checked in on me throughout the internship to discuss my feedback from my projects. The Careers team were always there to ask any questions and respond quickly and the IT department were excellent whenever I stumbled across any IT issues.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture is excellent. Everyone I have met at BDO is nice and polite and always willing to offer their help if they can. The general atmosphere is lovely and I would recommend the company to anyone. BDO makes you feel like they value you as a person.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at BDO, I would recommend it highly as a place to work. The office is amazing. The activities/fundraising activities look like so much fun and if I was working at BDO permanently I would definitely love to get involved. The people here are so nice and supportive and make you feel like you are welcome and part of the team whether you are on the project for 2 days or 2 weeks.

What advice would you give to others applying to BDO
Try your best throughout the application process. Be yourself and have faith in your own abilities. Do not try to act like you know everything because the whole point of the internship is to learn about audit and BDO.
