About us:

The Database Architecture team in Stevenage helps power cutting-edge space programmes for premier customers like the European Space Agency (ESA) and leading commercial satellite providers.

Our team delivers essential data and software solutions across the entire lifecycle of major space missions—from ESA flagship programmes like the Vigil, Aeolus 2, Forum, the ExoMars Rover and Biomass to commercial projects like OneSAT. As an intern, you will apply your software development and data management skills directly to these high-impact technical solutions.

You’ll be joining a passionate, collaborative group of technical experts who are dedicated to solving complex space engineering challenges—and excited to support your personal and professional growth.

What you will be doing:

As a Database Architecture team Intern, you will gain hands-on, end-to-end experience building data management software for active space programmes. In this role, you will:

  • Drive End-to-End Solutions: Help analyze spacecraft engineering use cases, build prototype software, and carry projects through to final testing and delivery.
  • Tackle Diverse Challenges: Work on varied tasks that build your technical, project management, and communication skills.
  • Collaborate in an Inclusive Team: Bring your unique perspective to a diverse group that values creative problem-solving and flexible ways of working.
  • Uphold High Standards: Maintain ethical compliance and act with integrity, supporting our commitment to sustainable growth and excellence.

Requirements:

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

*Your application should include a CV along with a Cover Letter outlining your motivation and suitability for the role.*

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Studying towards a Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or related field;
  • Experience with Java programming (Java 11 preferred);
  • Experience of working with database technology (non-relational preferred e.g. MongoDB);
  • Knowledge of Github (willing to present their published github);

Desirable:

  • Intellij;
  • Linux,Scripting (bash, Python);
  • Scrum/Agile;
  • Container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker);
  • Continuous Integration;
  • Front End Development (e.g. Angular, React);
  • Web API framework (e.g. Spring boot / Rest API);
  • Web/GUI development (UI/UX, HTML, CSS, Javascript/Typescript);
  • SQL, PL/SQL;
  • Subversion;
  • Microsoft Access database;
  • Jenkins.

In addition to demonstrating the following:

  • The ability to listen, understand and communicate information;
  • The desire to work in a technical team environment;
  • A strong interest in developing yourself;
  • Interest in finding creative solutions to complex problems;
  • Able to make decisions based on evidence;
  • The desire to work in an open and trusting environment.

This Job Request will be allocated to the projected Joint-Venture scope towards a leading European player in space.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
