About us:

A complex area of maintenance and retrofit engineering in aerospace, Systems Engineering has the responsibility to create the technical information for the production of the instruction dossiers (‘Service Bulletins’) to implement improvement and upgrade modification. In the UK a significant proportion of the focus is on, but not limited to, Landing Gear Systems and Wing Structure. There is also opportunity to experience other areas such as fuselage and the wet/dry systems, gaining you visibility of many challenges the aircraft is faced with. As the product cycles are very long the tools used and ways of working are always changing and evolving in line with ever increasing company focus towards its responsibilities to society and the environment.

Continuous improvement is at the heart of what we do and Systems Engineering is an exciting domain of Customer Services to work for in a number of ways:

  • We are a key interface and the closest area to the Design Office in Customer Services, whilst having the airline customers as our main focus;
  • We are a small agile team, yet able to rely on a large network and bigger extended organisation;
  • Our teams at Retrofit Solutions Engineering level are distributed across sites in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, India, USA, and transnational collaboration is part of the daily work;
  • Our work is very varied with many interactions, our Service Bulletins cover Standard (apply to all aircraft in a family) and Upgrade (dedicated to a number of aircraft at the request of the customer) scenarios;
  • The UK areas of responsibility and topics include most of Landing Gear, Wing, and Fuel topics, and others for all Airbus Commercial aircraft.

What you will be doing:

You will be given the opportunity to work in a small, experienced and collaborative team, for the in-service aircraft, as well working alongside colleagues from all over the wider business. You are expected to contribute to the creation of optimum solutions, to own smaller projects, and to support on-going activities. You will also have the opportunity to be part of an early careers community to support your professional development.

As an Airbus Intern in this team, you may find yourself working on:

  • The identification of installation drawings Design Solutions;
  • Feasibility analysis;
  • Configuration management;
  • Continuous improvement initiatives like processes;
  • Knowledge capture;
  • Quality and problem solving;
  • Future ways of working (like new integrated tools).

The team will provide you with a challenging, exciting, and rewarding working experience with learning opportunities that will bring both aircraft (for UK topics) and non-aircraft (like methods and processes) knowledge. You will gain experience and relative training on a variety of different toolsets, from bespoke tools developed for Airbus to engineering and management tools used by the whole industry.

Requirements:

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

*Your application should include a CV along with a Cover Letter outlining your motivation and suitability for the role.*

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Studying towards a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent (no preference);
  • Inquisitive and analytical mindset with good problem solving skills;
  • Interest in the topics and the industry;
  • Nice to have: knowledge in Computer Aided Design (e.g. CATIA) or modelling tools (such as ADAMS, Matlab Simulink, Fluent);
  • Awareness of programming languages (with the willingness to run scripts for example);
  • Willingness to learn and develop different skills (technical, project management, communication, reporting, rigour, etc.);
  • Willingness to learn from mistakes and channel feedback into personal development;
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
