About us:

The Electro Magnetic Hazards (EMH) Lightning Direct Effects (LDE) group is a highly specialised and transnational team of engineers working within the Airbus Systems Engineering Design Office. We are responsible for providing all aspects of aircraft protection against the direct effects of lightning strike and Electrostatic discharge (ESD). We contribute to all phases of development, through development and certification, to inservice support of the growing fleet.

We operate across all Airbus sites, all Airbus aircraft programmes and all aircraft components (wing, fuselage, empennage) and new interns will be fully integrated into a transnational way of working, encouraged to work with colleagues on all Airbus sites and functions, on a daily basis.

We are passionate about developing placement students to prepare our future, and so whilst you will be given challenging objectives, you will also be fully supported in your mission to fully exploit the state of the art knowledge and techniques in aircraft lightning protection and in doing so develop your technical and behavioural competencies.

Our Interns operate in a very challenging environment, where they will be given a real and valued role within the LDE team. During the Internship, you will get the opportunity to have multiple placements working with experienced teams across the Airbus Aircraft Family, from new developments through to in-service Aircraft, as well as working alongside customers, suppliers and manufacturing assembly where necessary.

What you will be doing:

During this placement, the activities you may undertake will include:

  • You will contribute to our work as an Engineer in the field of EMH Lightning Direct Effects and Electrostatic Discharge within the Airbus Systems Engineering domain.
  • You will be involved in a variety of topics like electro-magnetic hazards, standardisation, electrical architectures, certification, environmental qualification.
  • You may design and define commissioning or investigative tests, with the opportunity to interact with the test laboratories and witness LDE and ESD testing (so cool), concluding such activities with the delivery of analysis of test results and conclusions.
  • You will contribute to development of optimised lightning protection solutions for the design & development of aircraft fuel tank & fuel system protection using latest analytical & test techniques.
  • You will contribute to harmonised design solutions and policies that have aircraft level benefits across multi-programme and multi-components where possible.
  • You will work closely with the fuel systems and structures departments, as one of our main missions is to provide protection to the fuel system.

Requirements:

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

*Your application should include a CV along with a Cover Letter outlining your motivation and suitability for the role.*

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Studying towards an Engineering or Technical degree, ideally Electrical, Aeronautical, Mechanical or Physics based;
  • A natural curiosity and excitement to explore engineering principles and creating solutions based on technical intuition and evidence;
  • An ability to communicate clearly and concisely - collaboration skills within our team are essential;
  • Organisation skills - to plan the use of resources to complete goals and objectives to a high standard;
  • A keen interest in the Aerospace industry and profession.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
