Utilities Engineering Technician – Instrumentation

At Severn Trent

Level 3 Apprenticeship

“You’re not just a number at Severn Trent, you’re an individual.”

University wasn’t the right route for me; I wanted to learn on-the-job. When I joined Severn Trent I started out shadowing operations teams, but I quickly realised I was more interested in the mechanical side of things. I’m now in a more specialised tech role and I spend lots of time in college learning the ropes and new processes. You’ve got to have an eye for detail to avoid making mistakes. It takes a lot of persistence and determination: everything has to be spot on.

A huge part of my role is responding to unexpected problems, such as a leaking pump that we have to quickly repair or replace. When you first start doing things like building and soldering electrical circuits it can be daunting, but there are always experts on had to teach you – and it’s great to see your skills develop over time. I really enjoy seeing what I’ve learned being translated out in the field.

My ambition is to get onto a Graduate Leadership Programme. There’s a way to go yet, but it will give me a good foundation to take on a managerial role in the future. Severn Trent offers apprentices great opportunities for career progression in a really a unique business. So if you’re thinking about applying, just go for it! It’s a brilliant place to work.
