What made you apply to RBC Capital Markets?
Growing up in Canada, RBC was always a very recognised and respected name. When I found out that RBC was growing its business in Europe, I thought it would be an interesting and very rewarding learning experience to be a part of a growing business.
How much responsibility were you given during your internship?
During my internship, I was given quite a considerable amount of responsibility. The first two weeks were largely a learning process, where I completed work under the guidance of a senior analyst or associate, but as time passed I was expected to take initiative and manage my workflow much more independently. By the end of the internship, I was emailing company-specific trading news and market overviews to some of our largest clients on a daily basis.
What was the application process like?
The application process was very much like those you find at other investment banks. I submitted an application form along with my CV through the RBC Campus website and sat online numerical and verbal reasoning tests. Several weeks later, I met with the Campus Recruitment Team for a first round interview, following this I was invited to an assessment centre where I had the opportunity to meet with senior management from the investment banking division.
What do you do on a daily basis?
The majority of my time during the day is spent preparing marketing materials, such as pitch books and various presentations for our clients. As part of that process, I spend a considerable amount of time looking at specific sectors and companies - particularly those in the natural resources space.
What advice would you give to someone planning their placement / internship?
The best advice I received during my internship was to ask as many questions as I could. As an intern, you are not expected to come into the job knowing everything, so RBC has really worked to create an environment where open communication and a willingness to learn are appreciated.
