Higher Level Apprenticeship

1) So tell us a bit more about your apprenticeship Georgia?

I’m currently studying for an APM Project Management qualification via the new higher apprenticeship scheme (Level 4) – and doing so while working within Business Change and Automation. The structure of my apprenticeship is split into three rotations; shadowing within the Programme Management Office, shadowing a Business Analyst and finally becoming a Project Manager. I have learnt so much about project management within the six months I have been with DLG, the team I am surrounded by are so supportive and keen to see me excel in my career!

2) Why did you opt for an Apprentice Programme?

I wanted to get a flavour for the world of work, and believe that apprenticeships offer a range of valuable life skills that cannot be developed at university. I’m studying for a recognisable qualification at the same time as experiencing working life which will, arguably, give me the upper hand when competing against job applicants educated to a degree level. It’s also opened my eyes to the various opportunities and different career routes available to me.

I’m 19 years old, gaining great experience of project delivery while working on the Robotics programme, and I really feel I’ve developed a professional skill set way before others in my age group.

3) What key skills have you been able to develop so far?

This job role is lot different to being a student at school/college – tight timescales and important deadlines have been my biggest challenge so far. In education, deadlines do not have specific consequences (homework, revision, etc.). But as a project manager keeping to deadlines is essential, so I’ve quickly learnt how to manage / meet deadlines more effectively.

4) What’s your feel of the culture at DLG?

The DLG culture is extremely welcoming of work/life balance; I think this is very important as we all perform better when subjected to minimal stress. I also love the culture for development at DLG, the offering of secondments allows colleagues to realise their potential and climb the career ladder.
