Programmer

My role on my placement year was as a programmer in the Centre for Observational Research. This mainly involved analysing real world clinical data (i.e., data from GP practices, hospitals, and other sources across multiple countries) to produce outputs for use by epidemiologists within the department. The analysis for most projects was implemented in the programming language SAS, which I learnt throughout the year, and completed a qualification in at the end of the placement.

I enjoyed being able to learn a new programming language and apply it to work that would have an impact on the company. Programming can be both frustrating and fulfilling, but it was always worth overcoming the challenges involved in solving a technical problem to experience the satisfaction of a breakthrough moment or a completed task.

It was great being part of a cohort of placement students across various departments and being able to connect with colleagues the same age and stage as me. The Amgen placement scheme is well set-up and provides great experience in a working environment.

As well as the many technical skills, I learnt what it meant to work as part of a team and contribute in a meaningful way. As I gained confidence, I felt more able to take initiative and make decisions, but always felt I could ask questions if I needed help.

Going into my placement year, I didn’t know what to expect or whether I would enjoy the work, but it was definitely the right fit for me, and even led to a job after graduating! If you’re considering doing a placement year, my advice would be to go for it. Find a company that has a good reputation when it comes to placements, but don’t worry too much if you don’t know exactly what the role will entail. Any experience you gain is really valuable, so try to make the most of the year, but most of all enjoy it!
