Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Go on sites and commission BMS services. As an apprentice mainly watch. Some days attend Coventry University studying a Building services and design (BEng) degree.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
The programme is fairly enjoyable. It is what you make of it there are definitely great opportunities. When I get to be hands on the panels and software, or being trained by somebody patient who wants you to learn, it is very enjoyable. The internal training for the most part is great and a fun interactive way to get to know colleagues and learn. Conversely, Travelling some days across the country and standing around workless if the team member you're working with wants to do it independently is unenjoyable at times and the University can be a pain as the lecturers often just seem uninterested. It feels like a lot of the work you are travelling all the way to Coventry to learn, you could just be doing online if there was an option. However, I have met some good people that I go to the Uni with and we all have a laugh, which couldn't happen online. There are pros and cons.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Good training provided and some managers are keen to improve your confidence in areas and get you in the right environments to learn. I have definitely learnt a lot in my time at Schneider so far and have developed a lot as a person. Soft skills are a focus, they care more about these things than you being a good engineer at the beginning.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
It feels as though the programme has a good structure in the training side of things and the apprentice managers are good at what they do. This is a huge company and the manager in my team runs 3 regions which meant concerns could sometimes land on deaf ears. Sometimes it felt as though my two managers weren't communicating with each other. This confused me a bit with some mixed messages but this has since been sorted. I have since moved to a new service team which has more structure and is more organised.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
This is more of a difficult one to answer. I feel as though I have received quite a lot of support from my employer. I have had some personal family related issues in my time at Schneider which have been met with open ears and support for my situations which I am grateful for. I was also getting a hard time with some people spreading little things about me which some were just untrue. I had quite a hard time with getting pulled into teams meetings for swinging on my chair and getting told I don't ask questions and I do nothing on site which was far from the case. This was a complex situation with my time keeping also coming into play. However, my employer noticed that the team may have been making it difficult for me and moved me on a new to complete probation which was good support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Coventry University is ok. It gets the job done in terms of learning the qualification but like I say the lecturers just seem a bit disengaged often with questions you don't really get a straight answer but we did complain and our employer's apprentice team spoke to them and since it has been better.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
The qualification doesn't really help in the role as much as stuff that we learn from being on site but there are a lot of useful things we learn that we don't use in the role that are related to building design that help us understand what we do in the role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are yes we sometimes have after work events and we have christmas party.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Schneider Electric to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Schneider is a great place to work full of opportunities and it has definitely changed my life for the better.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Schneider Electric?
I would say that applying to Schneider if you understand how to network and create opportunities for yourself in this large company is a good move and/or if you enjoy engineering and love to work on major sites within your region, Schneider is the company for you.
